I read about this in a great book on modern-day confederate sympathizers,"Confederates in the Attic" - which was one of the most entertaining books I've ever read. There is a huge separatist movement that still exists. When the Malcolm X movie came out there was this whole response to black people wearing the X shirts that pushed the confederate flag back into pop culture (meaning, among baby rednecks)...they called it, "you wear your X, I'll wear mine". Of course that owes to a long legacy of stuff like the birthday weirdness. So things like that birthday weirdness don't surprise me anymore. Remember all the call for white rights and the backlash against take your daughter to work day? racism against whites is called "reverse racism". We live in a world of toddlers.
